I have written for weeks about the Republican's not so secret strategy to handicap the 2008 presidential campaign by benignly promoting the selection of a Democratic presidential nominee that they perceive to be weaker than Hillary Clinton. Now Karl Rove and other Republicans are not trying to conceal their true motives any longer. As revealed by their recent actions, their not so secret objective is to promote the candidacy of Barack Obama who they feel would be a sitting duck. Now why do you suppose that to be the case. Well there is more to be said about that later. Rove has even gone public with instructional commentary and pep talks to Obama. What can we expect next, a contribution to the campaign?
That is what I call the manifestation of fear. The GOP surrogates are relentlessly working the comment areas on the web, in newspapers and magazines, and perpetually are trying to gain traction with their overblown and overstated America hates Hillary rhetoric. I read one comment that complained about Hillary trying to take us back to the 90's. And that was supposed to be a negative. Sorry pal, but compared with the last seven years, the Clinton 90's look pretty good to most Americans. Another strategy is to try to discredit CNN and Wolf Blitzer in particular by referring to CNN as the Clinton News Network. That one is so prevalent that it has to be on the Republican talking points FAQ. I guess CNN remains too much of an independent voice. To be in the Republican cross hairs, CNN must actually be still reporting the news.
So expect more tips from Rove with Obama as the beneficiary of choice. Why Obama? In present day America, he is perfect for the GOP attack machine. There is his non-traditional name, the experience lite, and did I mention that he is Black. As much as the progressive and admiring Anglo-Saxon public appears to be intrigued by Obama, in this country when it comes to Black candidates, rarely have the actual votes cast matched the projections or exit polls. And make no mistake about it. The Republican Party will play the race card. The only unknown variable is when. A good prediction would be close to election day, because the race card is not about swaying opinions, it is about igniting fears and prejudices that have been proven to be good catalysts for mobilizing the GOP base.
Sidebar: Can you say Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton..Willie Horton? Before Bush/Dukakis, the most famous Willie Horton played baseball for the Detroit Tigers.
