Clinton and Obama: The Real Strategy
With the recent injection of race into the Democratic Presidential contest, we are left to scratch our heads in disbelief of the brain thrust of each candidate. What were they thinking? Frankly, I think it was strategy that backfired. Let's look at what could have occurred.
I think that the Clintons subtly injected race to solidify their status not with black voters, but with white voters in South Carolina knowing that they wouldn't completely alienate the support they enjoy from black people. The analogy between Dr. King and President Johnson wasn't necessary. The metaphoric use of fairy tale also wasn't necessary. Purposeful or happenstance, both actions unnecessarily divided voters along racial lines and that's a surefire recipe for a GOP victory in November.
With respect to Obama, the race incident tended to solidify his support with black voters some of whom continue to question if Obama is "black enough" as opposed to being too mainstream. This segment of voters should be smart enough to know that America is not going to embrace the black person running for president to become the black president. It's just not going to happen.
So after the latest attempts by Clinton and Obama to play nice, I hope that both campaigns get their messages back on the high road.
